Methodology

Driving cost uses the ATO 88c/km rate with modelled trip frequency tapering from 4 return trips a week near the CBD to a floor of 0.5 by about 70km. Train cost uses Transport for NSW Opal adult fares with the weekly travel cap applied. Both are drawn from the same model behind the Greater Sydney Running Cost Index, which covers all 760 Greater Sydney suburbs.

Why the gap exists at all

The maths is more interesting than "further equals more expensive." Driving cost is calculated at the ATO rate per kilometre, which covers fuel, rego, insurance, servicing and depreciation, not just petrol, applied to a modelled number of CBD trips a week. That trip frequency is not fixed: the model assumes 4 return trips a week close to the CBD, tapering down to a floor of 0.5 by about 70km out, on the reasoning that fewer people realistically commute into the city daily from the true far fringe. Multiply a rising distance by a falling trip count and the result is not a straight line, it is a curve that peaks around 35-40km out and eases off beyond that.

Public transport does not follow either curve. Opal fares in Sydney are distance-based but capped, with daily and weekly caps that mean a long trip costs far less per kilometre than a short one, and beyond a certain point the fare stops rising altogether, near $2,400 a year. Because driving peaks around 40km while the train stays flat throughout, the gap between the two is widest in the mid-outer band, not at the edge of the network where you might expect it.

Which produces the actually counterintuitive headline: the people with the most to gain from catching the train are not the ones furthest from the city. They are further out than commuter-belt suburbs like Liverpool or Blacktown, but short of the far exurbs like Camden or Richmond, where our model's driving-cost curve has already started to ease back down.

These are the suburbs where switching from a daily drive to the train delivers the biggest annual saving. Notice they are not the furthest-out suburbs on the list, they sit in a fairly tight 39-44km band. That is not a coincidence, it is where our model's driving-cost curve peaks.

The saving tops out around $4,350 a year, not at the edge of the network but in this 39-44km band. That is not a rounding error either: over ten years it is more than $43,000, before you even count the second car you might not need to own. Suburbs further out again, like Camden or Richmond at around 51-52km, still save a healthy $3,700-3,800 a year, just not as much as this band, because the model assumes an even lighter weekly CBD commute the further out you go.

The inner-suburb surprise: the train barely helps

Now the flip side, and it catches people out. In inner suburbs the train saves you nothing, because you were never spending much on driving in the first place. A Surry Hills or Redfern resident drives about $630-880 a year to the CBD, which is less than the flat annual Opal fare. Close in, the car is the cheap option, not the expensive one, and the crossover where the train starts winning sits a little past 6km out.

So the advice you hear all the time, just catch public transport, is only financially huge if you live somewhere that drives a lot. For inner-city people it is a nice-to-have. For outer-western people it is potentially the difference between one car and two, which is the biggest lever on the whole household budget.

The honest catch

Numbers are not the whole story. A $4,350 saving only counts if the train actually goes where you need to go, at times that work, and if you will genuinely use it every day rather than caving and driving anyway. Sydney's network is good but it is not everywhere, and past the edge of the rail lines the car is simply the only realistic option. A suburb with a station is a different proposition from one where the station is a twenty-minute drive from your house.

So treat these figures as the size of the prize, not a promise. If your outer suburb has a usable line into the city, the saving is real and large. If it does not, the car cost is what it is.
